Requiem for a Neighbor
(August 2006)
From Lexingtonian Weekly Newspaper Page 5 June 29, 2006
If you have been on Lexington's Main Street lately, we are sure you have noticed that another Lexington Landmark is gone! The house had been vacant for several months and was torn down on June 26. The stately home at the Northwest corner of Main and Vine was bought in 1903 by Frank Wise from the estate of Mary M. Kampfield. Mr. Wise added the large brick front porch as he was confined to a wheelchair. Harv Hallaway bought the house in 1945. In 1954 Hershell and Ruby Kemp bought the house. Kathy Phinney bought the house in 1967. The last owner was Don Murray who bought it in 2001. For older folks it is a little emotional to see landmarks being torn down. Duane Jacobs bulldozed the house to make room for a new Heartland Bank. Randy Jacobs is the president of the Heartland Bank in Lexington. This busy corner in Lexington is ready for making new memories now.
Do you have stories or remembrances you would like to share about the Kampfield/Wise/Hallaway/Kemp/Phinney/Murray home?
If you would like to add to our page remembering this familiar old homestead, please contact us at The Fort and we will update our page during the next few months with your stories. Thank you for helping us honor one of our close neighbors on Lexington's Main Street.
