March is Illinois Historical Marker Month

    (March 2008)

Our Lexington High School History Club has been instrumental in facilitating the placing of several markers in this area to commemorate important historical sites.  Each marker must be sponsored by a group willing to cover the costs of the marker. 100-word markers cost $2,000.00 and the larger 250-word markers cost $3,000.00, plus crating and shipping, so this was no small task for the young people and their dedicated teacher, Mr. Don Cavallini.

Old U.S. Route 66:  Marker can be seen just south of intersection of Main Street and Old Route 66 at Lexington.  The marker was placed in 1996.

Matthew T. Scott House at Chenoa:  Marker can be seen in front of the old home on North 1st Avenue and  Hamilton Street in Chenoa, Illinois.  It marks the home of the town's founder and was placed in 1991.

Patton Cabin in Lexington, Illinois:  One of the oldest structures in McLean County that was rebuilt in the Lexington Park District Swimming Pool Park.  The marker can be seen in front of the old cabin on Cherry Street in the park.  The marker was erected in 1987.

Kickapoo Indian Village southeast of Ellsworth, Illinois. The Marker can be seen at 3100 East Road about 1/4 mile south of Road 850 North.  The marker was placed in 1999.

Benjaminville Friends Meeting House:  Located on Road 2400 East and 1300 North at the site of the old church and cemetery.  The marker is off the road and adjacent to the cemetery.  Access is available through the cemetery driveway.  The marker was erected in 1995.

Twelve markers are listed for McLean County, with these five having been provided by the history club of Lexington High School.  That's a proud heritage for those students to leave.
