Cemetery Findings

October 2009

While looking for a topic this month I found this lovely poem free for sharing on the website www.ancestryprinting.com.

It seems to capture the thoughts of many of us when we finally find that elusive ancestor’s last resting place….

Dear Ancestor

Author unknown

Your tombstone stands among the rest;

Neglected and alone.

The name and date are chiseled out

On polished, marble stone.

It reaches out to all who care,

It is too late to mourn.

You did not know that I exist

You died ‘fore I was born.

Yet each of us are cells of you,

In flesh, in blood, in bone.

Our heart contracts and beats a pulse

Entirely not our own.

Dear ancestor the place you filled

One hundred years ago

Spreads out among the ones you left

Who could have loved you so.

I wonder as you lived and loved,

I wonder if you knew

That someday I would find this spot,

And come to visit you.

In my search I also uncovered a wonderful website made by a young man named Matt Hucke.  On his ABOUT link he tells of his fascination in visiting local cemeteries as a boy.  Over the years his interest has become a passion, as evidenced by the vast collection of information he has collected and posted on his website.

I wrote to Matt and received his permission to post a link to his information here for your viewing, but more importantly so our volunteers at The Fort can use his page as a resource and easily find his site when a patron comes in trying to locate any Illinois cemetery.  You will be amazed by the lists, pictures, locations, maps, and wealth of information found on this site.  Be sure to check the county lists and the accurate USGS maps available in different sizes and views.  I guarantee there are cemeteries there you have never heard of or even knew existed!

We highly recommend:

www.graveyards.com

Another site we find most helpful in our searches for cemetery and burial information is

www.findagrave.com

Together these two sites offer a wealth of information and encouragement to all of us “cemetery chasers!”   Good hunting to you all!
